You could see your winter snowbirding campground fees escalate next year if the city council of Zephyrhills gets its way. The city now charges a utility "unit" rate of $14.10 per month per occupied campsite for RV parks inside the city limits and $19.25 for those outside the city limits.
However, a new proposal before the council would change the "unit" rate to a "base" rate, meaning that the charges would be levied on all campsites, every day, even if the site is unoccupied--or remains unoccupied for months.
According to the owners of Magnolia Trace RV Park, the new charges would be an economic disaster since their park remains virtually empty for six months out of the year when the snowbirds retreat to the cooler northern states.
Yet they would continue to have to pay the levies on all their unoccupied campsites. That money, of course, would have to be recovered somehow, which would likely have to be passed down to the RVers who spend part or all of the winter there.
If this plan passes a council vote and other cities smell a new revenue source, then you can expect to see similar changes spread across RV parks throughout Florida as well as other snowbird areas.

I suggest you charge all those watermellon and other fruit and vegatable growers who now extract water for free from the ground to feed ther crops instead of killing your business industry related to toursism.
Seems that they can't manage the money that they collect now, why would anyone allow a cost increase. Is this public Utility Commission or the like to complain too? An email campaign and boycott of Fla would seem in order. It is the same with the Feds, they can't manage all those "give-me"programs and need to stop sending money to places that hate the U.S.and take care of our own.
Snowbirders may have to threaten a boycot and go somewhere else. I am sure this would get restaurants, stores and probably other business leaders at a few council meetings
Hey, No problem Florida. I just spent the winter in Az. and Cal. after 6 yrs wintering in Fl. I enjoyed it and don't mind going back especially if the cost is going to be the same.
