The legislature and governor are requesting the closure of 53 of Florida's 160 State Parks because of a 15% cut in the budget.
If there can be any good news associated with the closing of parks, it would have to be that all of those on the list for potential closing have fewer than 60,000 visitors a year, are only open during the day, and of special interest to RVers, none have campgrounds.
In the 2009-10 fiscal year, a total of 1.1 million people came to the 53 parks that could close. The same number visited Honeymoon Island State Park alone, the state's most popular. That year state parks drew 20.1 million people total.
